Whenever I’m feeling some kind of way about how people treat celebs (i.e. Darren) I always remind myself that this is how people on the internet are to everyone. I follow this woman on Instagram, for example, TheHyperbalist, and she’s no one famous, has maybe 15 000 followers but even that’s not really a lot by Instagram standards, and still she has trolls out the wazoo. And not just random haters, but people who have whole forums on Reddit discussing how much they dislike her and people who have contacted her work to try and get her fired. None of it is based on anything she truly does or who she really is of course; they’ve just *decided* who she is and that’s that. And because the internet is full of narcissists who think their opinions actually matter to a stranger, (or in our case a celebrity (who is also still very much a stranger) she’s inundated with comments and messages that have nothing to do with anything based in reality because, again, she is a stranger, and you can’t know someone from a 15 second Insta story or from an off-hand remark in an interview. And I guess my point is that if this type of thing happens to just a regular woman in her small corner of the internet, then what chance does a celebrity have? It’s obviously easier said than done to ignore this shit, but I think we gotta try.
